The Alamo (from the Spanish word for "cottonwood") has served many purposes throughout its rich history. It was built by the Spanish Empire in 1974 and acted as a shelter for missionaries and Indian converts for many decades. In the early 1800's, the Alamo was abandoned by missionaries and began to serve as a military station. It was the site of a major battle between the Republic of Texas and Mexico in the Texas Revolution. The Alamo grounds have many features, including a Calvary courtyard, an acequia, the DRT Library, and a Shrine. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. Photography is prohibited inside of many of the buildings, including the Shrine. There is a great deal of parking nearby, and Alamo official parking costs $5.00.
